I was a shelter volunteer for 14 years, working mostly with dogs which needed to learn to trust people. Not everyone who wants a dog should get one. Too many clueless or cruel people. The many mutts we’ve adopted over the years were all adopted and returned at least three times each before we took them home and helped them overcome or adapt to their anxieties. Each one different, each requiring different approaches.

Taxpayers once again paying to protect people from their stupid behavior. (sigh)

My brother had a Pug who would snap off ripe tomatoes from his garden and scarf them down. But only if the dog “caught” them himself.

There are some things that dogs can’t be trained to accept. We adopted a PitBull -X from a shelter who was terrified of fireworks, gunshots, and thunder. I was a volunteer trainer (specialized, serious training) but couldn’t stop her from trying to burrow under my pillow whenever these booms were around. On another note, it’s not only dogs. Mentioned above are the PTSD vets. Birds, beneficial insects, Elk, etc. are also sent into fear and flee response.

Tractor noise is noise, yes. But the other sounds that you complain about, I don’t understand why. They are natural sounds, and although they aren’t songbirds, they aren’t city crap, either.

Our neighbors removed their spotlight a few weeks ago after we complained to the HOA. The light shown into our windows, making it impossible for me to sleep even with shades drawn. Now they leave lights on inside the barn all night, because they think that their retired draft horses will be afraid in the dark. I grew up on a dairy farm and had horses, so this idea of theirs befuddles me.

Exploring is how one learns, at any age.
