Something sorta happened to me in the same way. On my smart phone of three years, I never did have a password to get to my apps(pictures, email, etc.) Just turned the power on and went to whatever I wanted. All of a sudden, when I turned it on it asked for a password. Still can’t get into the phone. I’ve tried everything but to no avail. One way would be reset the phone but I would loose all the info on the phone, like pictures, etc. I just keep playing with it and hoping one day I will be able to get in.
In his case, the vacation never ends. Sad!
