Whoa, good peg on the cost of the card. The card I got my wife (very beautiful card) was 8 dollars and something. We will be married 50 years in September. She is worth it (got her some candy too), wonderful Mom to our two children.

The earliest sunset is around December 7, the latest sunrise is around January 4. The waxing crescent moon in the cartoon could not be up at midnight in the winter, though in mid-summer it could set after midnight.

Actually the Greeks would not have laughed at the name. It is the combination of two Greek words ὑπό “hypo” = under (think hypodermic needle “under the skin”), and τείνω “teino” = to stretch. The hypotenuse was the side of a right triangle “stretched under” the right angle.

That is because of our electoral system which is based state by state, not all the votes counted together. If it were by simple majority then candidates would only campaign in the big states and cities and the rural areas would be left behind. The rural areas already have it hard enough. The presidential race is essentially 50 different races and the Connecticut Compromise in the Constitutional Convention helped to balance big states versus small states by giving electoral votes according to how many senators and congress members each state has. That weights things a little more in favor of small states than the weight they would have if it were all simply by majority rule.

Gerrymandering has been around for a long time, but it is we the citizens who vote people into office. Sure things are slanted by parties and there is plenty of money in politics, but we still each have a vote and can make a difference. I believe in American democracy and to me its genius is the protection of the minority from the hegemony of the majority. I like our system of government.

It was your first comment about the government agencies changing the title so as to avoid previous sensationalism. I was being sarcastic that such would not likely change the sensationalism. Thanks for the info you shared.
