Slavery didn’t end. Read the 13th amendment:
“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”
Then you can start asking why America has the highest per capita incarceration rate in the world.
And why African Americans are disproportionately incarcerated.
Not to mention what kind of civilized nation has prison quotas? (The majority of private prisons have agreed to keep at least 90% of prison beds filled or pay a penalty to for-profit prison contractors.)
Then you can start researching things like redlining, the Tuskegee study, targeted voter suppression (17 states with 28 new laws this year alone), the 1985 police bombing of a Philadelphia neighborhood…
You’re right. You aren’t personally responsible for slavery. But if you ignore the massive disparities in civil rights and keep playing the victim because you don’t like these things pointed out, you’re part of the reason it’s so easy for these kinds of policies to continue to proliferate and devastate US citizens, families, kids, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers whose only crime was being born in a country built on dehumanization and oppression.
