Just a guess; she wanted to do it and recruited him as a helper. She’s committed, he’s doing what she wants to do because he wants her to like him.

After losing our third child to a heart and respiratory illness at age four and a half, my first wife and I felt such a gap in our family we took in foster kids for seven and a half years, usually 4 at a time. Two places were little boys that came and went as their parents got their acts together, the other two were an 11 year old girl and an 8 year old Japanese-American boy. The girl was the “big sister” our daughter had always wanted and they were a great combination. Clarence was four years younger than our son Rick, and looked up to Rick and they got along great. We would have adopted these two if they had been free, but they had family that didn’t want to let go. We had to let them go when we moved because of a job change for me, but we kept some contact. The girl died at 42 from breast cancer just as her mother had. She had two lovely kids of her own. Clarence became a professional soccer player in Seattle. Both great kids.

I was a high school drop out at 17, hitch hiked 800 miles to get my dad to sign my enlistment papers for the Marine Corps. I was ignorant, dirty, undisciplined, clueless. Four years (1955 to 1959) helped me grow up a lot. I had talents well hidden — qualified expert rifleman 4 years in a row, got to try out for the 1st Marine Division Rifle and Pistol team and go to the Western Division Matches. Eighteen months seagoing on the USS Toledo, CA 133 gave me a tour of the Western Pacific, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Philippines, and was hosted to dinner in Manila by a survivor of the Bataan death march who credited a couple of Marines with his survival. He was the chief executive of Royal Dutch Shell Oil in that part of the world. The buddies you make in the Marine Corps are on a different level than others you meet. While in the Corps I finished high school and took some college courses. As a sergeant I developed some people skills that have helped me in every job subsequent to being in uniform. My sons and grandsons did not go to the Marine Corps, but they were never as * up as I was growing up, thank a merciful God. A final word: Once a Marine, Always a Marine.

Dogs make magic happen. Impossible not to pet them and feel better yourself in the process if they snuggle next to you on a couch or in bed. Not a mistake that dog is God spelled backward.

My wife has learned to make one-egg omelets with a little powdered milk added in. Add a couple of sausages (we’re trying out some chicken sausages from Costco that are OK — different texture than pork) add toast or bagel and it makes a satisfying breakfast, looking out at snow still on the ground. I like orange marmalade (Kroger stores have a good product almost $2 cheaper than Smuckers) or peanut butter mixed with honey. Good to warm the insides with a tasty breakfast.

I’m coming in the middle of this — haven’t even see a Dick Tracy comic for more than 50 years — but it is nice to see the comments open again. How about if your comment , if negative, included a positive direction you’d like to see in the comic?
