I think you are conflating dark matter and dark energy. Dark matter is what seems to provide the additional gravitational pull to hold groups of galaxies together and explain the rotation curves of spiral galaxies. Dark energy is the name given to the force that seems to be causing the expansion of the universe to be accelerating.
