Well…I started reading “Peanuts” over 50 years ago, have the complete Fantagraphics collection of the entire strip’s run, have read a few biographies of Schulz (including the controversial Michaelis book), and have never seen or heard of what you’re talking about.
However, at the beginning of this arc, Schulz did make reference to dogs having to serve in Vietnam but not getting to vote — which is a direct reference to the draft age being 18 but the national voting age still being 21 at the time.
So, yeah, I get an idea where his sentiments were.
Oh, Leopold’s inflicted plenty of physical harm on Gary. These donuts could, for instance, be lace with the caustic substance that completely dissolved Gary’s head one time.
Since Schulz would make the occasional political reference, I have to wonder if he’s here passingly referring to 18-year-olds not yet having been granted franchise nationally when this strip was written.
