    AQotWF: Near the end, one German private goes foraging and is gone so long his comrades become worried. In the morning, he shows up with a smile, a pail of milk and a milk maid.

    One of my favorite military comedies was Blake Edwards’ “What Did You Do in the War, Daddy,” but the title was too long.

    I thought about that, but the movie, starring Steve Martin in the title role, was so far removed, literally and figuratively, from the TV show, I used it anyway. (Some old folks would say the television show was definitive TV military humor.)

    I once enjoyed a meal in a French restaurant in New York City named “la Bateau ivre.” That was my introduction to the poem. Something about a sinking boat, but it’s in French.

    That picture was taken in 1941, probably in basic training. The jaunty expression was gone by the time he was discharged, in 1945.

    It doesn’t take a lot of imagination. It was more in the telling. He was a great storyteller.
