The main reason you don’t see headlines about known spp going extinct is there is no way to know for sure when it happened, or, indeed if it happened. You also never see headlines about how no one churns butter anymore, or how hurricanes have stopped happening. There is no such thing as evidence something does not exist anymore, so the knowledge that it’s gone takes a while to be sure of. Every year a species we thought was extinct turns out to be observed. Is it the last one? who knows?
