Dearest John, Both, your strip about Marriage and your acknowledgement to the passing of Mort Walker hits close to home for my family. I was visiting my parents the day the marriage strip came out, and they literally cut it out while I was there. It received a high place of honor on the refrigerator…trust me, this is a big deal! In the 70’s-80’s era, my dad was approved to copy Mort Walker’s Beetle Bailey for the U-Haul ad campaigns. Dad has received many personal correspondences from Mort, and had the opportunity to spend time with his son’s at the National Cartoonists Society event last May here in Portland OR. The loss of Mort Walker is the loss of an icon in the cartoonist’s world. I know that it saddened my dad deeply. On another note: My father, Ray Robbins, is turning 85 on March 10th. He has been a life-long cartoonist, illustrator and member of the National Cartoonists Society with a wonderful career working in the advertising department for U-Haul, developing Ad campaigns and working with many well-known cartoonists. After several years, he began his freelance career. He has been retired since 2007. However, as you well know, a cartoonist never lays his pencil or pen down. He has written four children’s books, still making the rounds of publishers and has submitted three comic strips for publications in the past. We are having an Open House in celebration of this incredible man on Saturday, March 10th. I know he would be thrilled and honored to receive a birthday greeting from you. If you are able, please send any greetings to me so that I may present it to him on his special day. My Contact Info: Ray Robbins c/o Nicole Reid, PO Box 2501 Oregon City OR 97045 Thank you so much and you are greatly appreciated! Much Obliged, Nicole Reid
