Go for it! Free study guides are online, and test fees are nominal; you should be able to find a test session being given by a local Ham club. The ARRL (American Radio Relay League) is a great place to start, as well – much info about getting licensed and operating practice there, and (IMHO) a worthwhile membership.

Yours is not an uncommon story; Hams in general are sensitive to and want to resolve RFI issues. The biggest problem is the cost-cutting design of many consumer electronics, which ends up with them emitting outrageous amounts of radio frequency noise across the radio spectrum, while having the electronic equivalent of a hissy fit when exposed to any sort of RF energies.

And when the poser’s the Shortwave Radio enthusiasts among us (Ham radio, SW listeners) rush to the radio to take advantage of the temporary lack of radio frequency interference from the neighbors’ electronic devices!! (That’s why we have battery backups for the radios!)

Lots of good suggestions here… My suggestion is Turner Classic Movies (TCM) – you’ll find plenty to watch there!

My go-to for strong language when I worked for a school district was “Fie, Drat, Curses, Maledictions, and Unkind Words!!!” Delivered with appropriate vehemence, it’s rather satisfying,,,
