The black is dirt. The white blobs are shaped like drops, so they appear to be saliva, since the kid is eating something, probably dirt from his shovel. I believe there’s a colorist error that makes his left arm, connected to the hand near his mouth, look like his brother’s right arm.
According to the story, Val had a good relationship with her husband. He died, that’s why she’s alone. I think this is just Val’s feminist views coming out.
