In April 2000, the Santa Ana Orange County printed Rick Polito’s humor column called “That TV Guy.” Among other movies, that edition spoofed Mary Poppins, “An eccentric nanny is hired by a wealthy family and immediately subjects the children to a series of psychedelic experiences and bizarre character-building exercises.” I never found the Oz listing.

Another paper said, "A wise guy put the following description of “The Wizard of Oz” in a TV listing in a newspaper." Many more papers called it a “TV listing” as well.

Good point. I went back to look closer. In his 1998 “Off-Kilter” column in the LA Times, staff writer Roy Rivenberg referenced the quote as Polito’s “TV Listing of the Week.” I did not find Polito’s actual post, so I can’t be sure how it was originally framed in his paper.

It did appear in print. In 1998, several newspapers highlighted Rick Polito’s satirical movie review of Oz, “Transported to a surreal landscape, a young girl kills the first woman she meets, then teams up with three complete strangers to kill again.” Politito was with the Marin Independent Journal. To paraphrase Three Stooges Curley, “I’m trying to get this joke but nothing happens!”

Yes it does. I read about this fact in a spy novel and didn’t believe it at first. :)

Sometimes Disney is very generous with its intellectual property. Google the “U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory” and “Mickey”
