See, as one example, The Economic Impact of Hosting the Olympics by Jennifer Willis on Investopedia.

  2. about 9 hours ago on Pearls Before Swine

I think those who lobby to host the Olympics do not appreciate the real, not the imaginary, economic consequences. That, or they know those won’t come to light until long after they’re out of office.

You can disagree, but there are plenty of published articles out there showing this is a matter of fact, not opinion.

Montreal took 40 years to recoup the cost from the ’76 Olympics, and that is not a unique experience.

Walmart. They’ll take pretty much anything back.

" Every stadium – municipal deal has different structure, but when looking at the entire picture, jobs, construction, tax revenues, tourism, and more, they do make money for the municipality."

False. I would paste the links to multiple articles showing why this is false but I can’t post links here.

Again, how individuals choose to spend their own money is their business. How governments choose to waste taxpayer’s money is another story, and wasting it while lying to people about how it’s a net gain for everyone is deplorable. Better roads, better schools, higher pay for teachers and police are good uses of tax dollars. Stadia that benefit already-rich team owners are not.

I also propose that you either don’t recognize sarcasm, or you’re one of Trump’s useful idiots who actually believes all the BS that comes out of his mouth.

Plenty of published research on the topic disproving the claim that sports arenas are job creators and net gains for the communities in which they are housed.

As for who am I to say it’s not jealousy, that’s easy. I’m not jealous of someone who earns a lot of money playing football. Good for him. I think it’s stupid that a trivial pastime can earn someone a fortune, but so be it. But taxpayers shouldn’t be on the hook to contribute to that mess when there are more important things that money can and should be spent on.

If you’re going to make a feeble attempt to insult someone else’s intelligence, you could at least spell the words correctly.

    its, not it’s.

Words are too hard for some people.

Whether it’s entertainment or not, who are you to say what others’ motivations are?

And do some research; sports arenas are LOSING propositions for the community stuck footing the bill. Those who want to be entertained can pay for it. The rest of us have better things to do with our money.

It’s not jealousy that makes one wonder why carrying a football down a field (or putting a basketball through a hoop) should be worthy of millions of dollars.

I wouldn’t care so much except that public funds are often used to build playgrounds for these millionaires and their billionaire owners.
