sigh The one who wrote this got so hung up on this thought, I lost what I wanted to say about Alan’s sacrifice.
Alan’s a hero, in the truest sense of the word.

As someone with DID, this… resonates. A lot. Dealing with the outcomes and consequences of the choices of your literal past self is something that we’re familiar with.
Having memories of someone else, that don’t quite feel like your own but are yours? Also incredibly familiar.
This new individual is neither Cracky nor Wally. He is a fusion of both, as others have noted, and has a new and unique perspective that also allows him to be somewhat removed from his sense of self. For us, it’s a state of mind that allows us to analyze ourself, past and present, while also experiencing the emotions of the now. Something it seems the new Wally is doing in this crisis.
Amazing writing, imo.

I mean, he’s said as much in this very page, panel 2 in response to Duffy’s question about expecting a thanks. “it would be rather Gauche, considering I don’t know what the consequences will be…”

Terrence is not taking this well. Not at all. That face in the last panel.

If all roads lead to Rome, what happens if no one has shoes to walk them? IF you have no shoes on your feet, you can only get so far before you have to stop and rest. The road is rougher on those without shoes. They stop along the way, end up other places. Places they may not have stopped. And things happen.
In other words, someone’s stealing the means to get to that source. The means of travel. In doing so, they’re keeping the natural order restricted.
I don’t know enough about the previous comics like Free Energy to really comment in context to those, sadly.

“Closing time,/ Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” – Closing Time, Semisonic
My one issue with the idea is that the hole is of a width that they would have to do the ‘back to back, walk up the wall’ trick. By the time they got set up and started climbing that way, the floor will have snapped several times. The frequency has been increasing through the arc and is happening at a steady clip as it reaches completion.
If they could get together fast, it might work. Cardoodle luck and ingenuity may be all that saves them either way.
