I remember being part of a debate team in elementary school one year. The head of our debate team thought it was so obvious that we’d win that he did nothing but practice his winning speech. I tried to tell him that we needed to research the subject before the debate but he and the rest of the team were so sure we’d win that they all ignored me. When the debate happened they were caught off guard and didn’t know how to answer any of the points that were brought up. When the debate was reviewed I was the only person on our team that made a significant point, all the other points went to the opposing/ unpopular view.

I was the only one in the theater to burst out laughing when Michael Douglas did his “American Express?” Line in Romancing the Stone, was I the only one there old enough to make the Karl Mulden connection?

When I was in 9th grade I was confronted by about 6 guys after I reported a drug deal I witnessed. They took great pleasure in telling me what they were going to do me, so much pleasure that the bell for the next class rang and I saw the class they ran to. A couple minutes later the class disciplinarian found me still shivering in terror leaning against my locker. He knew about the drug deal I reported and realized that the other boys had somehow found out that I was the “narc.” When he found out that I knew what classroom the boys had gone in to he led me in to the room, apologized to the teacher and asked me if I recognized any of the boys. I looked around and thought I recognized the spokesman from the gang and started to point him out, but before I could say anything he jumped up from his desk and screamed, “I’m not going down alone! He was there, he was there, he was there.”. He ended up pointing out everyone involved. I have no idea what happened to them after that, but no one ever gave me any trouble after that.

One of the best nonfiction books I ever read was “Life is so Good” by George Dawson, the autobiography of a 90+ year old man, the son of a freed slave who didn’t learn to read or write until he was a great great grandfather.

I remember one time in math class the teacher had a problem on the board and was in the process of explaining it but had to pause when he realized something was wrong, after a few seconds I spoke up and pointed out how he’d copied down the original formula wrong. He corrected the mistake and then corrected all the mistakes he’d made based on his original mistake and took the problem through to the end. I was never sure if he was thankful or embarrassed when I pointed out the mistake.

When I was a kid I read a biography about the globe trotters, I remember one of the shorter members (I think it was Pablo) was so short in elementary school that he was always the last one picked for basketball and always ended up on the bench for the game where he’d practice his dribbling. He got so good at it that by high school he was a star player, dribbling circles around the taller players and leaving them so confused that they couldn’t block his shots. Those dribbling skills were what got him on the globe triggers.
