I was diagnosed as a type II diabetic at 67. It is five years later and my doctor said you can change your exercise habits, diet and mindset and still die of diabetes or cancer or whatever. My doctor knows I like to eat what I want, but I agreed to no sodas and no extra sugar or salt in anything. I walk and exercise a bit because I like it! I picked what I would control and I just let the other things like a STRICT diet go. My labs are fine, but not ideal. I walk a lot to keep circulation going especially in my feet and legs. Amputations come from lack of circulation of blood. Keep it circulating! Take care of your feet. See your doctor 2 to 4 times a year and take your prescribed meds. I chose exercise over a very strict diet. It works for me. My Mother was also late onset diabetes in her 60s. They said it would kill her one day. She is 94 now and still at home, watching tv, walking a little with her walker, and watching her diet a little. I think family history ( genetics) is something to consider. Hang in there!
