I agree with the Democrats that if there was not enough time to affirm Merrick Garland’s nomination, there should not have been time to affirm Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination. Yet, packing the court is just as ill-considered now as when FDR attempted it. The two issues should not be conflated. The country is already torn asunder. To effect this change may undermine the last measure of public confidence in our civic institutions and render a modern Fort Sumter inevitable.
