It was heaven, particularly with an answering machine which was just the right level of technology. Now I have to have my gol danged phone on my person 24/7 so I won’t miss whatever nonsense somebody dreams up. We were independent back then and free as a bird.
On the negative side, when we lose power after a hurricane you can’t see your hand in front of your face but on the positive side, there’s the Milky Way right back where it used to be in the 50s. We don’t need nightlights in our house because the light pollution that filters in works just fine.
I used to want a jet pack until I saw one demonstrated and it became apparent it was a touch-and-go situation with a container of aviation gasoline strapped to your back.
They say today’s youth would go crazy, literally, if you took their cellphones away but give me my old landline with an answering machine and I’d be in hog’s heaven again.
