GMAC hasn’t existed since 2010, when it was bought with private equity and renamed Ally. These days it’s a 100% public company. Also since 2010, there’s the new “GM Financial,” but it’s not GMAC. It was purchased as a completely separate company.
Consider just the United States, which had a population of 203 million in 1971. Today we have nearly 340 million. (And for some reason, all of that growth wants to live in San Francisco and complain that there’s not enough housing there!)
