   For those who do not understand the joke in the daily Garfield comic, I will be explaining it. But first, I must explain the setup so that there is context to the joke. The setup goes like the following, Garfield is in a room with a reddish-pink wall, a television on a stand, and a light blue chair. This repeats for all three panels. The first panel shows Garfield leaning over, excited. Words are shown coming from the TV exclaiming, “Cookies and milk at every stop!”. The second panel is a repeat of the first one, except the words coming from the TV say “WOOOOOO-HOO!”. The third panel shows the TV stating “‘Santa blows his diet’ will be right back.”. Garfield is shown shedding a tear from his eye, saying “Gets to me every year.”. Now that I’ve explained the setup, I can now follow through with the joke. And the joke is Garfield loves eating unhealthy food, so the TV exclaiming “Cookies and milk at every stop!” would clearly snatch Garfield’s attention. And because Garfield loves unhealthy food so much, he sheds a tear, and says “Gets to me every year.” because of how much he loves unhealthy eating. In conclusion, Jim Davis is a living modern-day Socrates. This comic is just another hilarious addition to the Garfield comic series that Jim Davis hand crafted with layers upon layers of thought and depth.

   This joke is a hard one to understand, considering there are no words.

   Someone I know didn’t understand the joke, so I wrote this out for them. Then I just thought I’d post it here incase anyone else didn’t understand.

   I will explain the joke in today’s Garfield comic. But first, we must walkthrough the panels. The first panel shows Odie hunched, with eyebags around his eyes. The second panel shows Odie yawning. The third panel shows Odie asleep. Odie then wakes up, and falls asleep in the next three panels. Jon then wakes Odie on the 6th panel with a bowl of food. The seventh panel shows Odie fallen asleep, face flat into his filled food bowl. This repeats for the 8th panel, except there is a heart above Odie’s head.

   Clearly, Davis has established that Odie is tired. But the joke is, Odie is enjoying the fact that he fell asleep face first into his foodbowl. This is shown in the last panel, when Odie’s tail is wagging, and the fact that there is a heart above him.

   Such a hilarious joke, with such good payoff. This comic is just another perfect example of Jim Davis’s masterpieces of art that he spends hours perfecting, just so he can release his piece to everyone for free. Although this comic does not contain Garfield, it’s still hilarious nonetheless.

   That’s just plain hilarious!

   Why is Jon’s chair set in front of his door? Obviously the comic shows that he’s waiting for Garfield to return home. But Jon had sat at his chair for 17 days on end. It’s almost like he is waiting for something more, something very major in his life. Jon is not waiting for Garfield, he is waiting for life to take him. Jon sees no worth in continuing. He lost something so very important to his everyday life, that he cannot continue. Jon is awaiting the sweet release of the Daily Garfield Comic. So that he may laugh at how hilarious the Daily Garfield Comic is. This comic is no different than me waiting for the Daily Garfield Comic. Jon perfectly illustrates losing all hope, and desirability to continue. Until finally, the Daily Garfield Comic is released.
