It sounds too much like the Industrial Revolution, when women working in factories would give their babies opium to keep them quiet and out of the way.

I apologize. There had been some serious TJ hate going on some years ago and I was afraid it was reviving. I shouldn’t have said my piece so rudely.

Oh come on! Not this myth again. Go back and look at the strip about the actual event. TJ was in a grumbly mood, he took out the trash, and while dumping the trash the van blew up behind him and he looked completely taken by surprise. If he had staged the whole thing, he would have been in a happy mood, knowing that he was about to be unburdened of a liability and get a lot of money. He also would have smiled slyly as it blew up behind him, not looked shocked (Keep in mind that nobody was around to see his face except us readers.)
Now I’ll grant you, Brad thought that TJ had blown up the van for insurance, and he was really nervous on TJ’s behalf. At that point, yes, TJ was happy, and this made Brad suspicious. But TJ was happy about a stroke of good luck, not a crime going as planned.

Go Comics for some reason won’t let me post my reply to you on another thread you started (this seems to be a consistent recent glitch. But you asked why Bernice cared what Luann thought, even though she has made it clear that she doesn’t respect Luann’s opinion on anything. It’s because she’s projecting her own doubts and self-disapproval onto Luann. I’ve got a friend like that—always accusing me of judging her for things I don’t find objectionable at all, but then talking it through shows that she’s the one who condemns herself.

I agree on using prudery as a shell to protect herself. I used to do that, myself. Yet I think Nil is doing exactly what it takes to get through to her—by logically questioning everything she says in a way that she can’t lightly dismiss, being the intellectual that she is.

Ms. Phelps only became Mrs. Fogerty very late in life—it took her till the man of her dreams was balding to make the leap.

The whole point of her conversation with Nil is that she’s ashamed and puzzled by her own behavior. And no, kissing isn’t slutting around. That’s why it’s being done on a park bench and not in a motel. The openness of a park operates as a chaperone, without the embarrassment of being chaparoned by someone you know personally.
In the pre-DVD days it was stolen Playboy magazines hidden in the attic. In the pre-Playboy days it was lurid penny arcade mutoscope shows, which were why the Motion Pictures Production Code was invented. Before that I suppose it was watching barn animals.
