The cynical nature of the series that Charlie Brown always found himself in, in the later 1950s and own wards strips stems from Charles Schulz own depression as a child and adult. A reflection of himself, and that within it self spawned relate-ability or to empathize with the character. Sure Charlie Brown not taking nothing from nobody or at least being less shy like in the earlier comics is cool. But honestly wouldn’t have made for as much of a compelling character that you’d wanna root for or would’ve been as unique,iconic as the one we all know and tend to love today.
