A trick that I have used to fall asleep is to count backwards from one thousand, counting down one number per breath. It is boring and drawn-out enough to make your mind wander (which happens as you fall asleep), and when you lose count, you know it’s working. Only too much caffeine and exercise too close to bedtime prevents it from working, and then you make it all the way down to one. Also listening to an episode of Alistair Cooke’s Letter To America on the BBC, with the volume fairly low, works well. However, he was an early right-wing broadcaster, disparaging hippies, Democrats, environmentalists and non-whites. Alcohol is actually bad for sleep, as your body reacts to its sedative effects with a stimulus response. When the alcohol has been metabolized, the stimulus response wakes you up, and the result is insomnia. Alcohol has also been found to be carcinogenic, so it’s best avoided or drank in moderation, on spread-out occasions.
That is awesome. I watched a rerun of Chips and the bad guys (teens in a dune buggy) wore the same clothes and sat in the same seats for the several days that the episode included. Most likely because the episode was filmed in a single day.
