    I believe you’re conflating “negative character” with conflict. Gil has been dealing with the loss to Gerads and now Marty’s lapse in his sobriety. Gil has been warned and now can’t ignore the signs that there’s something wrong with Keri. To me, Mimi is giving Gil the push he needs to deal with this problem.
