Buying a live Christmas tree supports my local farmers and the economy of my state, plus keeps trees on land that might otherwise be turned into rental homes in the mountains. The “extra” day might also arise out of that melding, as Nov 1 is All Saints Day and Nov 2 is All Souls, which in some parts of the world are also observed by spending time with the dead by cleaning and repairing graves, covering them with candles and flowers, and which had older traditions of sharing meals with the spirits who could return during the change of seasons.
