I mean, I could take out a loan (n), or the bank could loan (v) me some money. Either way, Mr. Beeson.

Yes, of course people are entitled to their opinions – it was the ugly way so many expressed their thoughts that was upsetting. And I have always, always wondered, why do I have to have a thicker skin? Why don’t others need to be kinder?

April called to dinner. April is busy. Mom offers to be accommodating and bring her a plate and gets shouted at. I’d be upset at my kid too.

No fault on Elly’s side at all. She offers dinner, April is busy, so she offers to bring a plate. It’s not nagging, it’s trying to accommodate her busy daughter.

I think many commenters forget that the early days of John and Elly’s marriage were in the late 70s/early 80s. Women’s Lib hadn’t necessarily caught on with everyone, and it was an expectation for many couples that women work in the home and raise the children while the man worked. It’s probably how they were raised, and it’s difficult to step out of stereotypes set for you.
