   I have a memory of a scene where a woman looks into a bathroom mirror and sees herself old, or ill. Can’t remember anything more, though, and it probably wasn’t TOS.

   Same here! Leisure was not a problem, but day to day dressing for work or college was.

   I have seen that behavior in people who were most certainly not homeless. Once or twice, I have even, in good faith, picked up some paper to return it to them. I really thought they had dropped it by mistake. The reactions went from sheepishly accepting the paper back, to innocently(?) saying they didn’t need it anymore.
