Born late WW2. Originally from Oz, then Boston and NYC as a little child. Parents from NYC and London. Served in Malaysia, Singapore, and Australia with Air Force and Army. Fairly widely travelled elsewhere. Love Big Band orchestras and swing music, also much classical music. Now old and arthritic, but brain still seems to work, thank God.

Nitrous oxide initially failed its demonstration to the medical fraternity, as it is not a very powerful anesthetic, although it has moderate pain relieving ability, hence its use with oxygen to ease pain at childbirth. (Epidurals are infinitely better, but not always available), N2O [NOT NO2, nitrogen dioxide] was soon followed by di-ethyl ether, which was much more successful (at ā€˜The Ether Dome" at Mass. General, in Boston, administered by William Thomas Green Morton). Ether is highly flammable, slow in onset, and very nauseating. [Chloroform is more dangerous, however]. There is a statue commemorating etherā€™s introduction to anesthesia in Boston Public Garden, near the eastern end of Marlborough Street. Its use, and other drugs and techniques that followed, were the beginnings of vast improvements in surgical abilities and techniques, with which we are able to benefit today.

See Bob Hopeā€™s picture ā€œThe Paleface,ā€ with Jane Russell, I think, and Roy Rogers, followed by ā€œSon of Palefaceā€ (also Bob Hope, who was a Harvard student or alumnus, strangely).

One of our late English relatives, on visiting us in the southern hemisphere, informed us that the Sun moves backwards across the sky in the south.

Incidentally, it is rumored that a landing team found Alice Kramdenā€™s body on the moon.

That happened to a pilot that I know while doing an emergency landing with an unlocked main wheel on a commercial twin-engine plane. Just after touchdown, still at speed, and not yet fully settled on the runway, a passenger sitting behind the pilot sat up from the brace position and slapped the pilot on the back, saying ā€œYou did it!ā€ Fortunately, no-one (nor the aircraft) was damaged, although the passenger deserved to be.
