I was with my dad when his home computer got hacked, with a message saying security has been breached and he should call a number on the screen. He ended up talking with some guy for quite a while before he instructed him to pay to have any viruses removed by sending him thousands of dollars in gift cards! I pleaded with him that this is a scam, but he wouldn’t listen to me, and I tagged along with him as he went to a Lowe’s Hardware to buy the gift cards. This scammer remained on the phone with us (it was my phone), and I finally went to a store clerk explaining what was happening. The clerk took the phone and told the scammer she was a police officer, and the scammer immediately scrambled, saying he was the district attorney… named Jerry Pickle! Scam thwarted before my dad bought any gift cards, and this was a wake-up call for him. We checked his bank account to make sure no money was taken (it wasn’t), and we changed his bank account password and installed a malware detector onto his computer.
