Our 8-1/2-year-old grandson loves his broccoli trees from preschool to 3rd grade. Other parents say how? She does not mind preparing backup meals. Imagine being eight and playing soccer, swimming, and everything else. Not in the old days, had to wait until Junior High.

Their relationship is more important than all the other stuff. After Sunday morning sailing for three years, my future wife booked our Honeymoon at Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands; we came home to Phila, built our first home, had 3 kids, and then in ’73 moved permanently to St. Croix. Only my wife has steered our sailboats for 50 years.

You are right! Poor management, short hours for the employees which means no benefits, and no “gifts” of stocks, no matter how small, kills the old fashioned desire to go to Sears.

In 1950, every Friday night, our Dad, Mom, my sister and me, our baby sister, grandmom, and our dog would drive from Chester, PA, to Lewes, Del. We all slept on a 26-foot boat and woke up an hour off-shore so Dad could load up on Sea Bass for the deep freeze. We returned home Sunday evening. No complaints.

Same thing, we took the kids to a waterpark, and I wondered why the men were wearing Speedo-type suits while I had on boxer trunks. Learned why real soon.

It is hard to change a kid’s mind about something. Our three were raised in the VI, competitive pool swimming six days a week, sailing, and snorkeling on Sundays after church. But our son does not like to swim over coral. Yet he swims long distances in the sea. He was first in the 6.2-mile swim in an Ultraman in Florida several years ago. When small, he saw a 5-year-old die when candy got stuck in her throat. He would hide his food rather than eat it for a long time. Smoothies helped him until he convinced himself that he needed to eat properly.

In the late ’80s, we had a 48K TRS-80 from Radio Shack on St. Croix, USVI. When teens would gather to party on our large property, with a 30K gallon pool, plenty of outside shade, many trees, good music, and speakers, they would wait in line to use the Computer. the nearby private school had a room with computers donated by businesses. My wife would open up the GHS library before 7:00, and the students were ready to use every different brand. It is hard to hold kids back!

In college, in the ’60s, I did a lot of after-hours jobs in the engineering office. I just had to heat the coffee pot sludge to keep going. I did the assignments during the day when I was fresh.

I Love the different viewpoints in “For Better or Worse.” Things are going to happen, and decisions are made, no matter how you grew up or try to raise your kids.
