William Tenn wrote a story to this effect in the 1950s. Time traveler wakes up in the future (now far past our time) to be greeted by a man driving a car with big tailfins and no speedometer. He makes a buzzing sound with his lips to show how fast they are going. In that future, everyone has got the stupids.
