You can get an idea of who might have used the “silent interpreter” on the blog from some of the entries:12. “Where does …. live?”13. “Do you have ….? (e.g. weapons)” 17. “Where are you going?”18. “Give me your papers.”19. “Where are weapons and ammunition?”
The photo of three mourning women on the blog is actually kind of famous. It’s from the funeral of George VI, Left to right are: the new Queen Liz; the deceased king’s mother, Queen Mary; and his widow, Queen Elizabeth (later known as the “Queen mum”).
Reminds me of a National Lampoon cover with this quote from W.R. Hearst: “Give me a magazine cover with a beautiful girl, a dog or a baby on it, and I’ll give you a magazine that sells,” over a picture of a beautiful girl serving a roasted dog (with an apple in its mouth) to a baby.
I saw this for the first time in my brother’s dorm room 34 years ago, and for the second time a few seconds ago, here: http://lampoon.rwinters.com/Lampoon1977.htm. Though I’ve thought of it many times in the intervening years.
… not to mention some of the interesting items in the first two columns of pictures at the bottom.
