Also, women who actually rode (and controlled) their own horse, rode astride. Until the more modern sidesaddle was introduced, allowing the rider to sit facing forward, the horse would have been led, as the rider was basically sitting on a horse-shaped bench.
And many of those only 2 – 6 issues a year. I think Smithsonian and National Geographic are the only monthlies I still get. And for Smithsonian, I’ve gone to digital.
