Quite possibly. But because you can’t get something different, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have an opinion or merely accept the oil company’s.

Maybe we should save it for lubrication and useful products instead of just burning it up and poisoning the air and climate.

bpshand: Partially, but not totally true. Long haul trucks’ cargo can piggyback on electric trains within range of electric tractors to take it the rest of the way (the electricity generated by a wide variety of non-fossil means). Ships? Check out Wilhelm Prölss’ Dynaship concept, there is one (a yacht) in operation (and for sale) now. It works. It lacks Carnot efficiency, but aircraft can operate on alcohol, liquid hydrogen (from electrolysis) or methane (from anaerobic digestion of sewage), rigid airships even more so.
