It’s not that much fun. I once got a subpoena in a double murder case. The D.A. was just fishing; the victims & defendant had all been in my taxi, never together, not going to the same place nor at a relevant time.
I think “person of interest” was coined to be the equivalent of the British “assisting with our inquiries” (anything from witness to serial killer), but always used in a context of “prime suspect”.
