Red and Rover by Brian Basset for February 03, 2012
Transcript:
So... She works for him, but they're married to different people, yet on their lunch hour they kinda play husband and wife away from the office. Is that about it? So far. It amazes me how much new stuff you learn when you're not in school. Jim, I love you!... And I'm going to have your baby.

Switch to the Animal Channel Red, it’s far more interesting!

Sounds like “John’s Other Wife”, but I think that was just on radio, not TV…is it time for “The Edge of Night” or the immortal “Dark Shadows” yet?
dippydawg86 over 12 years ago
This reminds me back when I was young and sick. Those soap’s were wild. They don’t make them like that anymore.
kristencuwrf over 12 years ago
sounds like your going to learn a whole lot more red!

I’d have turned off the TV and gone to sleep long ago. I can’t stand soaps.
gforgina over 12 years ago
Mom will probably show up any minute now saying “That’s enough TV for you today, young man.” Oh yes, I remember Barnabas Collins and ‘Dark Shadows’ too!

We had a grand total of 3 stations… but we sure had more fun outside than kids do these days!

nothing works better when you’re sick than curling up in front of the tv and letting the shows blend into one another while you doze with a dog by your side watching over you

I like how Red refers to the adulterers as playing husband and wife. Oh, how innocent!
uniqueknitter over 12 years ago
Yep, and that was just ONE storyline…

It’s nice that his parents put the TV in his bedroom while he’s sick.

I remember learning all kinds of interesting things while watching soap operas. I also remember being horrified when there was nothing else too watch than those things.

Love this comic strip, reminds me of when my Lab, Cookie was still alive, I see so much similarity in this strip and our adventures.

Red appears to be getting well, soon.
agedfanboy08 over 12 years ago
Back then the only stations we had were ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, a local Religious station and an independent station that showed old movies and cartoons in the afternoon.

Red’s learning really quickly now.

Goodness, forget the soaps. Kids learn WAY TO MUCH just from the commercials that are on all day now! Viagra, PMS, incontinence, birth control, KY Jelly, and on and on.
arendtma over 12 years ago
Red;s Mom needs to be monitoring his viewing! I wonder what Rover thinks of all this?

Poor Red! He’s learning bad stuff, but at least he doesn’t understand it.
burleigh2 over 12 years ago
Call me nuts… but didn’t this arc get played out several months ago? Maybe it was a different comic, but I swore it was Red… he stayed home and “learned stuff” from soap operas. :-s

I can remember coming home from school and my grandmother telling me about all the goings on in her “stories.” Never got into them myself.

Back when I was a kid, we had the standard three channels, plus KET, nearly always a countdown clock showing how long until the next program, or a documentary about how their signal was sent out by an airplane (?!) instead of a ground antenna. But if it was raining hard, I mean buckets, we could get a faint image from Channel 41 in Louisville, which meant Presto the Clown commercials (underwhelming editing effects for the “magic” appearance of products), Husker Du commercials before the government made them strip out the subliminals… and if you were lucky, Ultra Man reruns… In later years, we had “Happy’s Hour” on Channel 62, WTVQ. This was the classiest kid’s show ever… Three Stooges, Flash Gordon, and I don’t know what all else. Kids today have so much they don’t really have anything. TV shows that are program-length commercials for toys, should at least have good animation… OUR program length toy commercials were better! “We’ve got a gorilla for sale!” “They’re wonderful toys! They’re Ideal! Get it?!”

Mom should select his channels a bit more carefully!
