I greatly admire Joyce’s work. I refuse to believe he’d stoop so low as to seek Oprah’s endorsement (though he was rather willing to promote his work).Happy Bloom’s Day!

I give Oprah credit for getting her audience to actually read books, even if one disapproves of some of her choices or her interpretation of them. (I thought Jonathan Franzen’s response to her choosing The Corrections was mean-spirited and sexist.) Just getting college students—-English majors at that—-to read Ulysses is like trying to get stones to weep.
