According to Snopes the claim that you must have your appendix and wisdom teeth removed to work in Antarctica is false.

Saltine crackers? Or Not!

According to my last two colonoscopies [I have color pictures] my appendix is just fine right where it is. But I too dread the cold.

I seem to remember a story of a doctor having to remove their own appendix in Antarctica… I guess they don’t want that to happen again! I don’t really understand the wisdom teeth part of it, though.

Appendix has to be a new rule. When I went it was only wisdom/dental work. But that was they year they had to make the emergency evacuation of doctor with cancer.

Common surgeries. Leaves no room for that problem.

Good thing I hate raw tomatoes.

And for Anarctica, I can understand about the appendix. After all, if you did suddenly get acute appendicitis, that would be an emergency and you likely wouldn’t be able to get to a surgeon or bring one in soon enough. But why the wisdom teeth? I know for some they can start bothering them, but surely that could wait until you got back home?

I’ll go with the “or not” on the cracker thing. One of my favorite snacks and I’m a lifelong dental cavity free person.

I mainly eat Ritz and Wheat Thins – guess my teeth are safe!

I have 2 of my wisdom teeth and my appendix, and I guess it makes sense not to have them because if they got infected when you’re 3000 miles away from medical care in the most inhospitable place in the world you’d be screwed. So no rules about tonsils?I also remember people used to think tomatoes were poisonous because the tomato plant is a member of the nightshade family, but I never heard of the werewolf thing. So how did the tomato turn out as good as it is? Usually wild fruits are small and not as good tasting, and it takes selective breeding to make them actually good or even edible. Is it a case of people having domesticated tomatoes a long time ago, then somehow they forgot about them and the rumor got out that they were poison for some reason, but somehow a wild population survived until that brave dude ate a bushel of them in a town square to prove they were safe?
