I like to put crackers or pretzels out for the grackles to watch how they deal with them. Usually the alpha male tries to eat all of the stash, and they defend it so fiercely against anyone else (including their own harem of females) that the hens have figured out a dodge of their own. One will pretend to try and take a piece near where Mr Bigshot is standing, and he’ll lay into her, and while he’s distracted all the others will sneak in from behind and take their fill.
Haven’t watched long enough to see if the females take turns being the decoy, but it wouldn’t surprise me.
