We have some squirrel-planted pecans, but every spring, we have a veritable lawn of red oaks. I give away the most robust before the first mowing – after the wild onion harvest. Ours are never in contention for the best yard award, but could be a winner of “the most productive without agriculture” if they had that competition. Plus blackberries. All on a 120×200 foot lot that is mostly structures.
One of the characteristics of a rodent is that their front teeth never stop growing and they have to gnaw to keep them ground down. Squirrels are designed for chewing through nut shells.

I expected to see the little red bird from yesterday with its beak caught in the nut.

In Oklahoma, there are little pecan trees sprouting everywhere from squirrel-planted nuts where they buried them and forgot where.
