Usually the checkout person has seen hundreds of items go by on their shift. And doesn’t really care what they are. They will, or at least should, notice damaged packaging or spoiled food though. And checking your age if buying alcoholic products or tobacco.
They will spend some time though looking for where ‘they’ hid the bar-code or price.
I’ll sometimes stop at the neighborhood grocery store just to pick up various things to restock the fridge and pantry. One time you could almost see the gears turning, as if the young checkout clerk was trying to figure out what you make with enchilada sauce, peanut butter, pickles, whipped topping, and bread.

I shop in a supermarket where they require a drivers license to buy a lottery ticket. They swipe it, too.
