It’s not easy outwitting squirrels in their quest to get into bird feeders. One way that works is to put a feeder on a pole far enough away from trees and other structures so they can’t jump onto it and grease the pole.
my step father did this – spent a half an hour on a ladder trying to ’squirrel-proof] the bird feeder he put up, got done, climbed down and starting to put stuff away in the garage, turned and there was the squirrel sitting on the bag of bird food, munching away and watching him the whole time

We feed critters in the backyard
The food is there, squirrels and birds come to eat it
Our cats watch out the window for entertainment, so do the humans
Everybody’s happy
