The day before my mother died, I got a call from the nursing home, where she was in hospice care. The Nice Lady told me that Mom’s heart had stopped. While I was processing that, I was further informed that she was still breathing, albeit lightly. I pointed out that this was somewhat unusual—your heart can keep going if your lungs stop, but your lungs don’t keep going if your heart stops, though there are sometimes minor spasms that mimic breathing. Anyway, the Nice Lady backtracked considerably. The next day a guy from Hospice called and said that death would occur in a few days, but it wasn’t imminent. She died about three hours later.

Is it my imagination or is her face the exact same shade of blue as the doctor’s scrubs?
