he wasn`t honest. he was a war monger, waged war on civilians, tried to assassinate the Confederat government, brought german communists here to help fight his war of aggression
Modern times wouldn’t allow Abe or anybody else to get away with the things he did. The for-profit media don’t respect the office or person as they did a century ago – find a newspaper printed back then and you’ll know what I mean. And Abe broke parts of the Constitution – suspending the writ of Habeus Corpus, spending money without the approval of congress, sending the Army of the Potomac south without the approval of congress, etc. – in order to save it. Too bad Andy Jackson didn’t have the media to scrutinize him. Maybe the Cherokee expulsion wouldn’t have happened.
It is not only the media’s fault, it is the fault of every American that doesn’t scrutinize the people that are running for office, that just ‘go with the flow’. And that doesn’t work for the just the Presidency, it goes for every elected official starting in the towns and cities and on up. Otherwise, we(in Illinois) wouldn’t have two governors spending time in prison. Don’t listen to what these ‘tricksters’ say, watch their actions, they speak louder that words. Thank you, I’ll step down from my ‘soap box’ and retreat into ignominy.
@g55rumpyI was not aware of Germans or other foreigners having fought in our civil war. And I don’t know if the “Communist Manifesto”, published in 1848, had been widely received in the U.S. But I’m receptive to an assertion if credible resources are cited.
Aside from suspending the right of habeus corpus, ignoring the slavery issue until it was adventageous to gain European military support, and emancipating slaves only in states that were in rebellion, he was one hell of an honest President.
I have no doubt that many of our leaders want what is whats best for America. I feel that many of them truly believe they are working for the best interests of the country. But lets faces facts, What is probably in the best interest for me, is possibly not in the best interests for others. Therein lies the problem. Where I truly feel we went wrong is when we started allowing more and more federal control over the laws of the land. Those actions will not reverse without drastic action and I don’t think the country could stand it.But then, I don’t think the country is going to stand much more of whats currently going on.Looks more and more like a Catch-22.
Lincoln had a hard time getting elected for his very first office. His aim as president was to keep the country together. He needed a victory in battleto get the 13th Amendment on slavery passed. Otherwise, the South would see the act as desperation. Antietam was the go ahead.

The kid has a point there. There was a movie also where Abe Lincoln fought Vampires. No other President did that.
