Reaper must be a gorilla, his arms almost touch the floor.

Drew - have you ever hefted one of those scythes?

My arms would be long too after carrying that sucker for an eternity.

I would believe in the hereafter if only I could remember what I came here after.

rac0308 you’re right about that. I used one many years ago and I’m still amazed that people actually used scythes. I was exhausted after a few minutes.

jtpozenel: Once again, great minds are on the same track, or something…Back in my young, strong well-conditioned days (I was climbing up and down telephone poles all day, on hooks with 50 pounds of iron strapped to me), I tried clearing my lot next door with a scythe. What a joke. I’d like to say I got halfway through but that would be an out and out lie. I went down, rented one of those big motorized “Weedcutters” and did the job. You can have peasantry and the middle ages - no thanks. (It originally seemed like an easy, inexpensive and quick solution - just swing a scythe - ho, ho, ho.)

Ushindi: I think that my problem was using a scythe that was not as sharp as it could be, and using it to cut down green weeds. If it was optimally sharpened and used to harvest grains, it might be a different story..

You may have found also, that if you get into the right swinging rhythm, lean back, and let the weight of the scythe do most of the work, it’s a bit more productive. You can’t really muscle these things to work the way you want them to.

Actually, jtp, what I found was that in all the years since, I have never had any desire whatsoever to pick up a scythe again, and have not.

I think that I’d try it once more, but certainly not for long. I’m not as young as I used to be, lack the stamina, and I’m very aware how I’ll be feeling the next day.

That’s why God gave me money, jtp, so I can pay OTHERS to do these nasty, sweaty tasks, while I have a cold drink and look at Gocomics.
