I agree, although athletes and coaches wouldn’t make the kind of money they do if it was more than the market can bear. Until people stop spending $50-100 per ticket to attend their games (or stop watching them on TV, which would lead to sponsors dropping out), we won’t see contract values go down. Most of us would have a hard time turning down an offer of millions of dollars out of altruism.
If taxpayers didn’t build and renovate most of the stadiums for the team owners (and frequently taxpayers don’t get a real vote in the matter), think how different everything would be.
Bob Cousy said that when Dennis Rodman had a lengthy suspension the money he lost during that suspension was more than Cousy made in his entire career, playoff and all.

Oh, and one of Mickey Mantle’s jerseys was auctioned for $125,000, more than the Mick even made in a year.
