Football — the incorrectly named American version — IS boring. Even the NFL has acknowledged there’s less than 15 minutes of actual game action in a typical three-hour-plus game. That’s why I, at least, ignore it. Instead, give me an exciting futbol match like that 0-0 Mexico-Brazil meeting at the World Cup, or a college baseball game like last night’s 15-inning thriller between TCU and the U. of Virginia at the College World Series.
I think the main reason why many Americans don’t like soccer/futbol is that it can’t be “Americanized.” Dumbed down to suit their tastes. College soccer has been “Americanized” to an extent with the time outs and unlimited substitutions (until the last several minutes of each half). I enjoy watching soccer matches. Some don’t. I get it and so should they.
I find my whole life is much better by not worrying one bit about any sports. I’m always happy to hear my local teams do well, but I don’t invest any time or energy in them.
I’m a fan of traditional American sports like baseball, football and basketball, but I also enjoy non-mainstreamers like cricket, rugby and arena football. No problem with anyone who doesn’t like soccer or whatever (no sport appeals to everyone), but why do people feel the need to denigrate a sport when they don’t enjoy or understand it? Nothing bores ME more than a three-hour NASCAR race (give me the sprint cars anytime), but I don’t go out of my way to talk about how boring I find it…I simply find something else to watch.
Football is not incorrectly named in the United States (America is the continent). The length of the the football is twelve inches (one foot), hence the name. If anything, futbol is incorrectly named as they use their chests and heads as well, but that is not really the point. I don’t care for it as much because I can’t stand the flopping. I have the feeling that I am not alone on that.
Soccer is just short for assocciation football and the Brits were the ones who came up with the term shortening TO soccer. .That said, I find that I enjoy sports most when I’m there, with the crowd, rooting for a favorite team so soccer doesn’t much do it for me since there aren’t games I can get to. Pro basketball and football are right out thanks to ticket prices and I’m not fond of the Olymics on TV much either. Tank on the other hand is amusing ;)

I must be an infidel. I just can’t get into football the way I can get into American football and basketball.
