It’s usually the woman that plays the " I could have married someone else" card.

First panel reminds me of a similar scene in Prince Valiant getting married with Aleta in the wilderness. Father Joseph is blessing the couple making the sign of the cross with his right hand. See? Now they are married, just in case the readers of the time had any doubts.
