Maybe he considers College professor" to include “Football coach.”
But to play Devil’s Advocate, it may be a stretch to put college professors in the 1%, but is it impossible? A Senior Professor, maybe a Department Chair, at a prestigious university? Particularly if he/she has been hired away from another school for prestige?
To get to the 1%, I think your income only has to be something over $200,000 or so. There are fields where, if you’re really lucky, you can crack the 1%, or even the 1% of the 1%. Steven King (let alone J.K. Rowling) would be in the 1%, but what about some guy who took 10 years to get a novel published, which sold just enough copies that he can afford to write another? Charles Schulz’s cartooning put him in the 1%, but that doesn’t mean Ted Rall’s there. The 1% is still big enough to populate Houston.
I wish dividing the country into the 0.01% and 99.99% was as “catchy” as 1% and 99%. Breaking into the 1% may make you “Well-to-do”, but it’s still nothing compared to the “Obscene Wealth” of the 1% of the 1%…

Wall Street isn’t the only place one can find 1%ers. They include college professors, athletes, authors, artists, and Hollywood types.
